More Details on YouTube Live Stream Chat

A YouTube account is required to post comments

Setup a YouTube account and login with your username/e-mail. If you don’t sign in your YouTube account, you can’t post any message at all.

    Live chat availability

The live chat feature is only available on YouTube watch pages, not on embedded players. So in order to comment on live videos, you will need to be on the YouTube website.

    Live chat views

Viewers can choose between two views of Live chat at any time.

  • Top chat: This view filters messages such as potential spam to help make chat easier to read and more useful.
  • Live chat: This view is not filtered. It shows all chat messages as they come in.
  • Respond to someone in the chat feed

You can respond to someone in the chat feed by mentioning their username.

    1. Type “@”.
    2. Begin typing their username.
    3. Select the username.

Both you and the mentioned chat member will see their username highlighted in the live chat. This highlight makes it easier for them to see your response in the chat feed.

    Message limitations

Viewers are limited to 200 characters and a maximum of 11 submissions every 30 seconds. Event owners are not subject to the frequency threshold. Viewers cannot post special characters, URLs, or HTML tags.

    Retracting messages

If you make an error in your chat message, or the cat walks across the keyboard, you can always remove your message. To do this, hover your mouse over your chat message, click the three dots on the right, and select “Remove.” This retracts your comment from the stream.

Getting notified when a YouTube video goes live

If you click on the “Set Reminder” button, YouTube will show an alert in your browser when it goes live. If you have YouTube on your phone, it’ll pop up there, too.

    FAQs on YouTube Live Chatting

Can I watch a YouTube Live without logging in to an account?

Yes, you can watch any YouTube video or live stream without logging in to your YouTube account. However, you cannot use the chat feature, subscribe, or set reminders if you aren’t logged in.

I don’t have a YouTube account. How do I create one?

You can watch this video to help you create your personal YouTube account:

I could not chat because my YouTube account still does not have a channel associated with it. How do I proceed?

A YouTube channel is required before you can comment or chat in YouTube videos. If you are seeing the screen below, it must mean that your YouTube account still has no channel.

To begin chatting, do the following:

    1. Click the “Create a Channel to Join the Chat” button.

    2. In the next screen, enter your name, account handle and add a photo.

    3. Click the “Create channel” button at the bottom right of the window to complete the channel setup.

    4. Go back to the video and begin chatting.

Will I be able to see the chat if I watch a YouTube Live after it ends?

Once a YouTube Live ends, the video and the chat are both achieved together, so anyone who watches the live stream as a recording will also see the chat messages sent during the live.

Why are my comments not showing in YouTube live chat?

It is up to the channel’s owner to make the comments visible. It is also possible that the comments are flagged or marked as spam or are being held for review by the channel owner’s comment filtering settings.
